Mount St. Mary
Undated. Postcard showing the interior of Mount St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on Church Road. The church is decorated with flowers, possibly for a Harvest Festival. This Grade II* listed building dates from 1852 and was designed by Joseph Hansom, with the chancel and transepts added by Edward Welby Pugin in 1866. It was built to serve the Irish community who had settled in the area following the Irish potato famine of the late 1840s. The church closed in 1989 due to falling numbers in the congregation and has since become derelict. It was named by the Victorian Society as one of their top ten buildings at risk in September 2018.
