Oulton Coal Board Estate, construction
1950s. Image shows the National Coal Board housing estate, on Wakefield Road, under construction. The land was bought from the Calverley family by the NCB, and from 1953, 214 'Airey' type prefab houses were built. Seen here are the prefabricated materials that could be quickly assembled to create a house with a lifespan of a few decades. By the 1990s only Wordsworth Drive and Sugar Hill Close remained, the rest of the estate having been redeveloped.
