Kirkstall Road, number 87, Joppa Tannery, Harold Nickol Ltd.
5th May 1945. Exterior view of buildings belonging to the Joppa Tannery, Harold Nickol Ltd., of number 87 Kirkstall Road. The Nickol family had run the Joppa Tannery since it was established here by Richard Nickol in the 1820s. The firm manufactured 'upper leather' and, in the 1880s, employed between 300 and 400 people. Harold Nickol was one of the sons of the founder and his name was retained until closure in 1955, although from 1928 his son, Richard (III) continued the business. There is a factory chimney in the background. The photograph is taken from the opposite side of Kirkstall Road where old streets have been demolished, foreground. Some of the names of these streets were England Street, Florist Street and Grattan Street. The Joppa Tannery was situated adjacent to another tannery, William Paul Ltd., at number 91 Kirkstall Road (off camera, right.)
