We lived in the Salisburies until I was 9 and I went to the Clock School, so I was very close to this place for the first decade of my life. I remember it used to look a bit like a snow scene. We used to play in the gutters with what we called 'fever sand.' Some grown ups used to say it was soot from the power station chimeys, but soot is black. I remember seeing the TV programme when this disgrace was exposed. I'm suprised nobody else has added their memories - I suppose many of those involved will be dead

My Dad lived in Armley when he was a lad in the 1920s. I remember him telling me about "playing in the snow" from a local factory. He died in 1982 of lung cancer. Never smoked. I wonder....

I lived in the Aviary's just a stones throw away from here from 1960 -1976 with my parents & older siblings. I also went to the Clock school & also remember the asbestos in the streets, my brother & his mates used to dare eachother to jump from a low roof in the storage yard INTO the asbestos itself (he is still alive & well)!!! My father also died of lung cancer in 1992. Certainly makes you wonder. 12/11/2010
