27th April 1950. View of the junction of Otley Road and Otley Old Road. By a stone wall there is a triangular milestone giving distance in miles and furlongs. It lists Headingley church as 1.6, Leeds Bridge 4.8, Adel church 1.2, Bramhope church 3.6, Otley church 7, Burley church 10, Ilkley church 13 miles. To the left are semi detached houses and a metal give way sign.

The Burley Church mentioned on the stone is, of course, St Mary's, Burley in Wharfedale, not St Matthias's, Burley.

In response to Chippy's comment. Bearing in mind that the roads will have changed somewhat since this milestone was erected, I found it fairly easy to trace a route suggested by this stone, to Leeds Bridge. I found that the distance from this stone to Leeds Bridge is no less than 4 miles-1 furlong. This distance is slightly variable depending on which route is taken through town. As Chippy points out there are eight furlongs to a mile, which is itself 1760, meaning that a furlong is 220 yards. Another 440 yards would adjust my reckoning to 4miles-3furlongs. This milestone looks weather-beaten and worn. Could whoever read the stone originally, have misinterpreted the number '3' for an '8'?
