11th January 1950. View of Austhorpe Hall from muddy road across a field towards the house. The wall of the field is dry stone. There is a five barred gate and hedge round the field.

Austhorpe Hall stands at the top of what is locally known as Appleyards Hill and overlooks Crossgates Cricket Club the old Barnbow factory and the Manston Public House to the rear of the photo

Austhorpe Hall still stands today and will be gradually incorporated into the Thorpe Park development. Already houses are planned to be built on the Universal Stationers site close by. Having researched the area via web based records I know of links to the engineer John Smeaton. In my memory this building was known as Chapmans Farm. The point is - the history of this and so many other local buildings of note are being lost through a lack of information. This includes nearby Barrowby Hall and Waterloo Manor (amongst others). I would encourage anyone with a detailed history of owners etc to contact me so that I can collate and, eventually, publish the information.

The current owner of Austhorpe Hall is John Chapman and his wife Beryl(nee Mosby, and a cousin of mine). John took over the Hall and the running of the farm from his father, William Chapman.

Thomas Palliser, a clothier, was of Austhorpe Hall between 1672-1679, at the times of his children's baptisms and his burial. He was previously of Briggate and Meadow Lane in Leeds.

I live at Austhorpe hall and John Smeaton lived lower down Austhorpe Lane at Aushorpe lodge which was demolished in 1936.

I can remember Austhorpe Hall having a stone wall parallel with Austhorpe Lane(just at the top of the hill) in the 1950's. When was this demolished? I remember that the owners used to grow rhubarb at the hall gardens. Does anyone have photos of Smeaton's Farm (formerly at the corner of Austhorpe Lane & Whitkirk Lane, where the ruins of an old brick wall is today). How long ago did the farm get demolished? I used to like to see the chickens and other animals at the farm, when I was a small lad, when my family lived at Lulworth Crescent (1954 to 1962) Regards Mike Horne

D. Wilson - why would you want to "demolish this old relic". It doesn't cost you anything to have it there and its a damn sight prettier than the "affordable housing" being build nowadays.

I've always wanted to live in this house. I adore it so much. To the person who commented on 'Getting rid of this relic' only to replace it with boring boxes all of the same shape and size, if old relics were to be demolished, you'd be long gone !!!

Hi Patricia. I do remember Smeatons Farm very well, but not the people that lived there. My great auntie, Carrie Wilson, used to take me on walks in the area when we lived at Lulworth Crescent (access to Austhorpe Lane via a ginnel). You could see the chickens through a fence. The red brick wall, or remains of, was once part of the barn near the farm. It is strange that it has been left to decay, and can not be demolished (so someone informed me once). Aa while back, someone gave me a photo of the farmhouse, which brought back some memories for me of the area. I was only 7 years old when I left this area, but I have some really great memories of my time here in East Leeds, so I have written what I can remember for the local history magazine. Regards Mike

Can antone tell me when John Moore sold this property and to whom? I am a distant relative, compiling research. Some of my relatives and I are kicking around the idea of buying it back. This present house dates to 1694, but one stood there prior to that. Interestingly, the Realtor has not rerurned our inquiries. Please lend a hand if you know the history we seek. Thanks.
