This picture shows a workman riding the sled which was used to dredge the lake in 1956. Two huge traction engines provided the power for the steel rope draglines that hauled the sled. One was situated by the weir, beside Gledhow Valley Road, and the other at the top of the hill at the other side of the lake, close to Gledhow Hall. An earth retaining wall had been built beside the driveway to the hall, and this contained the mud released from the sled, forming an evil smelling layer over the grassy hillside. The traction engines signalling to each other as they pulled the sled back and forth became a familiar sound that summer.
