I have a vivid memory of being taken to see Father Christmas at Hitchen's one particular year; - - - the reason being, that the grotto was in two parts. Looking back, it seems somewhat unusual, but to a child, it would have been of no concern. The first section was all about the sea. I still recall the portrayal of rocks. fish, shells and mermaids, and if I am remembering rightly, a dominant colour, green. As you left that underwater world you were greeted by Neptune, sat on his throne, holding his trident. I cannot recall if any gifts were given out by himself at that stage. As you left Neptune you stepped into the 'færie-land' that was Santa's grotto. As you departed, totally awed by by the experience of visiting two magical worlds, there was Santa, assisted by his beautiful færie handmaidens, giving a present to each child who approached. A gift to be treasured. After all, it was from the great man himself. At that age, one never queried as to why he could be in other department stores at the same time. He was magic! - - - Still is, isn't he??? I wonder if any others out there can recall that particular Christmas at Hitchen's? It must have been sometime in the early mid-1940's.
