6th October 1947 Number 583 Selby Road, showing Howe's cycle and electrical shop; to the left (number 581) is D. Gath's Confectioners, to the right (number 585) is Owen's stores. Several bicycles are outside. The shop's door has an advertisement for a private hire taxi service on it.

I lived at no 577 until I was 8 and remember buying Black Jacks,Fruit Salad and yorkshire Mixture from Mrs Gath.

Was born in 53 and remember Howes shop just like this including the Taxi sign in the door. It didn't change much from 1947 up to 1960ish. As far as I remember the Howes lived for a number of years 3-4 houses to the left of the shops, anyone else remember ??

I lived in the shop with my brothers Graham, Gordon and Tony in the early years. Grandad bought next door and started selling Sachs motorcycles, mopeds and repairing Messherschmitts and then sold the shops to John Binner in the early 60s.

I was born in 1954, and lived at Lulworth Crescent until 1962. I remember some of these shops - Irene's hairdressers (also did children's haircutting), and also the post office (now long closed). Wasn't there a hardware shop on this parade in the 1950's/early 1960's ? I remember getting some sweets from a shop on this parade on my way back from Colton primary school (1960/62 era). I was born in 1960 and lived on Selby Road. I well remember Binner's and Irene's the hairdresser, where my grandma went regularly. There was also Wyn's haberdashery shop and Ross's general store, which was there for donkey's years. We got our first Woodpecker cider from there. At the right-hand end there was the Post Office which also sold food - biscuits which you got out of containers by the window, and lovely fruit pies. There was also a newsagent's, where I used to buy sherbert pips, also on my way home from Colton School and then later Austhorpe Primary.

We moved to 595 Selby Road in November 1939, on returning from evacuation to Great Preston. We were registered for food rations with Mrs Gath and she sometimes let us have extra food if she had a surplus. Mrs Mockridge kept the hardware shop next to the Austhorpe Electric Bakery and Post Office, owned by the Hartley's. In the window of Mrs Mockridge's shop could be seen accumulators being charged up for the radios of people in Colton who did nothave mains electricity.
