Knostrop Old Hall
Description:
19th January 1949. Picture shows the exterior view of Knostrop Old Hall. The front of the house is visible and has a large driveway leading up to it. The hall was built in the 17th century by Adam Bayes, the first MP of Leeds. It was lived in up until 1959 where it had become the oldest tenanted building. It was sold in 1960 for £50 and then demolished.

I was employed by the Benn Family from 1949 until 1965. The Benn family lived in the Old Hall Knostrop . I worked in a Coppersmiths shop adjacent to the Old Hall, actually facing the cottages just visible to the left. To my recollection The Old Hall was Still occupied by the Benn family at the time that I left their employ. please correct me if I am wrong

This photo and the comment by Mr P.Whittaker, are of huge interest to me and I would like to enlarge upon them. My mother used to tell me that Dad's family came from the old hall at Knostrop. I have met face to face with Tony Benn who feels that we must be related. His published family tree, starts with a reference to "Mr Benn, Leeds, 1815".but no reference to Knostrop Hall! There is much more!

My husband delivered newspapers here as a schoolboy. He remembers the coppersmiths and said that the place always smelt of acetic acid.
