The long black and white buildings in the centre was, or were to become, APPLEYARDS show rooms, also incorporating a vehicle repair department. Later on they used a small part of the floor area, and called it LEYCARE, DEPT (ley being short for Leyland). This was for car servicing. I worked there as a service mechanic for a few months in 1974. They had a BONUS system which, if you worked hard enough, you could earn X amount of £s. If you didn't earn up to a certain amount specified by ( THE MANAGEMENT), you wern't working hard enough. The CON here was, from MONDAY to THURSDAY mid day, the place was heaving with work. THURSDAY afternoon and all day FRIDAY,nothing doing. The reason being, people wouldn't register their cars after a certain time for fear of not getting them back before the weekend. The CRAFTY deal here was, the fact, that the BONUS already earned was not on a daily basis, but weekly. Therefore, to help pay your wages for THURSDAY afernoon & all day FRIDAY, ( THE MANAGEMENT) used most of our already accumulated BONUS. ( A RIGHT CON). I confronted (THE MANAGEMENT) about this only to be told, they couldn,t or wouldn't do anything about it. I told them, if this was the case i intend to leave. They must have valued my services, bacause they offered me an alternative position, in the DIAGNOSTIC, department which paid a better salary.I turned it down and left. 10-Feb-08.

The real conclusion to the above story, was. Being offered the diagnostics job, sounded great. Coming to work all dressed up for reception. All i had to do was listen to customers telling me about rattles, and sqeaks, coming from here, there, and everywhere, tell the customer what the problem was, then estimate the cost. I told THE MANAGEMENT my expertise was not sufficient to guarantee being right every time. No problem, they said. Just make sure you don't underestimate the cost,if your not sure, just tell them, it doesn't sound too good ,could be quite costly sir ( or Madam ).That, i could not do, hence the reason for leaving. My advise to anybody taking their vehicles in for repairs ANYWHERE,try talking to a relative or friend first, who might be able to help. Going into a garage showing absolute ignorance of cars, and you are VERY likely to be RIPPED OFF.
