I wonder how many folks remember that the roadway pictured here was once the inward bus route for all services from Headingley to the Bus Station - the number 1 to Beeston, as a cross city route, did not enter the Merrion Centre but descended Cookridge Street to City Square. Particularly at peak periods, we bus drivers had an awful and timewasting job to emerge into Woodhouse Lane from the steep slope just beginning bottom right of the picture. That slope is nowadays the pedestrian access to the Centre, and Morrison's is built behind the square railings shown.
