Because of its origins, this building was often referred to locally as the 'Cinemagogue'!

The Kingsway Cinema was purchased for £35,000 and was opened as the New Central Vilna Synagogue in September 1959. It closed in October 1991 and plans to replace it on the same site with a smaller synagogue did not materialise. The congregation had earlier (1986) moved to Harrogate Road at Fir Tree Woods and has since been known as the Etz Chaim Synagogue.
