Aerial View, City Centre with Rockingham Street Bus Station

Aerial View, City Centre with Rockingham Street Bus Station
Description:
c1962 Woodhouse Lane is on the left from the middle edge at an angle to the bottom edge. To the right, in the middle of the photo is a large car park and Rockingham Street Bus Station. During the Second World War a static water tank for emergency use had been constructed on the car park area. Prior to that, part of the land facing Woodhouse Lane had been the site of Albion Brewery. The Merrion Centre was to be built on this site, which would include the bus station.

Looks like it was playtime at Central High School in the bottom left. There are what look like children in the playground.

I'd have thought this photo was taken before (or very early) 1962. I left Leeds Central High School in July 1962 and feel sure the Merrion Centre had started to be built by then (mind you it is 48 years ago !!) and Wikipedia says it opened in 1964. The triangular-shaped site towards the top left hand side was to become Kitson College (now part of Leeds Met) where I took my ONC in Mech'l Engineering in 1964.

The Albion Brewery site was originally to have been the site of a new Odeon Cinema for Oscar Deutsch but, instead, the Paramount Theatre at the junction of the Headrow and Upper Briggate was used.

The large flat-roofed building on the left was at that time Leeds Central High School. I left it at the age of 18 in 1962 when this photograph was taken.
