New Briggate from the junction with the Headrow, watercolour painting by Pete Lapish

New Briggate from the junction with the Headrow, watercolour painting by Pete Lapish
Description:
August 1955. A view of New Briggate from the Headrow in this watercolour painting by Pete Lapish. It shows the Odeon Cinema at the corner of New Briggate with the Headrow, (nowadays, the large chainstore, Primark). The artist has made an accurate study of the locality at this period of time. He contacted the Odeon for information on which films were being shown: "A Kid For Two Farthings" starring Celia Johnston and Diana Dors. An ex-London Feltham tram on a short working to Briggate is being passed by a Chamberlain tram on route 3 to Roundhay. Part of the large department store, Lewis's, can be seen on the left-hand side. This occupies numbers 22, 24 & 26 the Headrow between Wade/Woodhouse Lane and New Briggate.

The Odeon cinema was originally named The Paramount, my dad worked there for a short time in the 1930s as a doorman.
