Black & White image1911 Caldwell Spruce had at one time been a designer at the Leeds Pottery. Seen here in his studio finishing a bust of Lord Airedale, first Lord Mayor of Leeds. He had not met Lord Airedale and worked from photographs. The bust was presented to the city by Sir William Middlebrook. It is in the Leeds City Art Gallery.

Black & White image1911 Finishing touches are being made to a bust of Lord Airedale (James Kitson), in 1897 he became the first Lord Mayor of Leeds. The sculpture was presented to Leeds by Sir William Middlebrook and is in Leeds City Art Gallery. On the left is a cast of Frederick Dawson, pianist. Behind the bust of Lord Airedale is a memorial plaque for Phil May, artist, born in Wortley.
