Civic Theatre, Cookridge Street (City Centre)
Black & White imageUndated. View of the Civic Theatre in Cookridge Street most likely taken in the 1970s. It opened as the Leeds Mechanics Institute in 1868 and underwent a change of use to the Civic Theatre in 1949. It was designed by Cuthbert Brodrick who also designed the Town Hall and the Corn Exchange. At present (2005) the theatre is closed, as in 2007 it will be reopening as the City of Leeds Museum. A new theatre has recently opened in Millennium Square appropriately named 'The Carriageworks' as it occupies the building which once housed the 'West Riding Carriage Manufactury'. The Leeds Civic Arts Guild continue to operate from the new theatre. Photograph courtesy of Stephen Howden.
