Art Gallery, refurbishment19th April 2007. View of Leeds City Art Gallery taken during a £1.5 million refurbishment programme in early 2007. The archway on the left, just opened up, leads to adjoining Central Library through the newly restored Victorian Tiled Hall in the room that once house the Commercial and Technical Library. This is the first time since the 1950s that access to the Central Library has been possible from the building that was built as an extension to the Municipal Buildings in 1888.

View showing the new Local Studies Library, on the second floor of of the Central Library, following a reorganisation in which Local Studies swapped places with the Business and Research Library at the other end of the floor. This was one of several changes made in this major reorganisation, with the Art and Music Libraries also swapping places and the fully restored Tiled Hall reopening shortly afterwards as a cafe and shop area.

The ceiling, for so long hidden from view by a mezzanine floor level while the room was occupied by the Commercial and Technical Library, has been restored to its original glory.

When the Municipal Buildings were opened on 17th April 1884 by the Mayor of Leeds, Alderman Edwin Woodhouse, this was the Reading Room and was used for the opening ceremony. After the adjoining Art Gallery opened on 3rd October 1888 the Tiled Hall was converted into a sculpture gallery. It remained so until 1955 when the Commercial and Technical Library moved into this space and the ceiling and walls of the Hall became hidden for many years behind a false ceiling, bookcases and panelling. The Music Library then occupied this room between 1998 and 1999. After the library re-opened in 2000 following rewiring and refurbishment, the Hall was closed to the public until the recent restoration which brought its original magnificence back into view.

The room has been restored to its former glory as a Victorian Tiled Hall, following many years when the decorative features of the hall were covered up while the room was being used as the Commercial and Technical Library.

The highly decorated walls and ceiling of the Hall have been restored to much like the original state they would have been in when the Municipal Buildings opened on 17th April 1884 and this space was occupied by the Reading Room. At the time The Yorkshireman described the room as 'a magnificent place' and feared that the spectacular ceiling would mean that 'people will be continually gazing up at it, instead of quietly reading the magazines and newspapers'.

This magnificent example of Victorian architecture had been hidden from view for so many years, since the space had been taken over by the Commercial & Technical Library in the 1950s and had had a mezzanine floor level put in and shelves covering all the walls.

View of one of a series of carvings of literary figures which adorn the walls of the Tiled Hall in the Central Library, this one depicting Sir Walter Scott. The magnificent tilework around demonstrates the splendour of the hall which was in the process of restoration before being reopened to the public in june 2007 as a shop and cafe.
