America Moor Lane, Wheatsheaf Inn (Morley) (3 comments)
Black & White imageUndated. The Wheatsheaf Inn on America Moor Lane, Morley, dated back to the seventeenth century and was probably the location nearby for the murder of the landlord John Fletcher by the highwayman Will Nevision, which was marked by a stone further along the lane to Howley Hall. In the 1890s travelling theatre shows began visiting Morley and sometimes the artistes were able to stay at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. The dwarfs on the right look as if they might fall into this category. The Wheatsheaf had several sports fields around it and at least one amateur rugby team used the inn as its headquarters before the First World War. It was demolished during the 1930s. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.
