Canal Basin looking towards Office Lock, watercolour by Pete Lapish (Holbeck)
Colour imageWatercolour painting by Yorkshire artist, Pete Lapish, with a view from the Canal Basin looking in the direction of Office Lock. The bridge (number 226) is very old, dating from 1841, but replaces an earlier one still, from the 1770s. Just over the bridge is Office Lock and the old, single storey canal office, visible behind the green barge. The bridge, the office and the lock are all Grade II listed. The italianate campaniles are also Grade II listed and belong to Tower Works in Globe Road. This was the firm of Harding & Son, makers of needles and steel pins. The area to the right, just off camera, has recently seen new development by Isis, established by British Waterways, with the construction of Candle House, the City Inn Hotel and Waterman's Place . This mixed-use scheme is known collectively as Granary Wharf.
