View shows one of several public houses in this area of Holbeck. This is the Volunteer. The building has a very distinctive castle style with a central turret and crenellated roof. A dormer window is decorated with contrasting stone ornaments while several windows on the upper floor are oriel windows which are unsupported bay windows. To the left of the Volunteer is P. Pattenden's newsagents also selling greetings cards and stationary. The windows and shop front are crowded with newspaper billboards and advertisements. On the right edge Domestic Street can be seen. On the left edge of this view, the doorway of Lake's corner, a grocers run by Frederick Lake can be seen at number 75 Holbeck Lane. The entrance to Stead Street follows to the right where a van for John Cooke and Son of Huddersfield is parked. This firm were concrete engineers and had works on Coleman Street nearby. Continuing right is C. Tobin's licensed betting office at number 77. Outside this shop is a road sign directing motorists along Wortley Lane to Huddersfield and Halifax and along Spence Lane to Armley. Towards the right the crenellated turret of the Volunteer public house is visible. [internal reference; 2003730_60224551:WYAS Domestic Street, Box 41, no. 66] |
