The landmark tower, seen right, was preserved and a new replacement church was designed around it. This modern church, to be consecrated on 9th July 1975, also replaced St. Chad's off Pepper Road. In the background, from the left, are numbers 6 and 7 Walker's Court and the side of the Black Horse, Public House which fronts Lawn's Lane.

Colour imageUndated. Image shows demolition in progress at the Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin during the 1970s. The 1864 building was replaced by a new church which was consecrated on 9th July 1975. The design for the new building incorporated the original church spire which is a well known landmark.

A modern church was to be constructed on the site to replace this 1864 building and also St. Chad's Church off Pepper Road. The landmark spire, seen on the right, was not demolished but incorporated into the design of the new building.

The photograph dates from the time of the demolition of St. Mary's which was consecrated in 1864. In the 1970s it was decided to build a new church on the site while still retaining the landmark spire. The new church would also replace St. Chad's off Pepper Road. It was consecrated on 9th July 1975.
