Behind it is the Civic Hall, white with two towers, and the Civic Hall car park. To the right of the Civic Hall is Leeds Metropolitan University and above slightly to the right is the Leeds General Infirmary. In the foreground towards the left is the tailoring manufacturer's, Hepworths Ltd. on Claypit Lane. Above the tree lined Queen Square is visible. Merrion Centre is to the left edge and the railway station is visible at the top.

Black & White imageUndated, Image shows the construction of the Westgate tunnel section of the Inner Ring Road at the top with the Leeds General Infirmary on the left. The tunnel became the site of the Clarendon Wing in 1984. The ring road also divides the two universities in half with Leeds Metropolitan University buildings under construction on the left and the expansion site of the Leeds University on the right. The ring road is crossed in the centre of the image by Woodhouse Lane, below this more road construction is taking place. In the top left hand corner of the image is the Civic Hall.

On the left of the roundabout a multi-storey building is under construction on Park Lane with the former clothing factory owned by Sir John Barren behind. On the right is the new Inner Ring Road built in the mid 1960s under construction. Today Clarendon Wing is built over the tunnel. On the right of the roundabout is Brotherton House the former Police HQ while directly above is Headrow clothes, now demolished. Near the top on the far right can be seen the Civic Hall and the original Mandela Gardens with the Town Hall below and the grassed area of Park Square further down. Below the roundabout is a carpark, now the site of the International Pool. The roundabout itself has been replaced by the Leeds Inner Ring Road and Westgate Point.

The buildings on the left of the ring road will eventually be demolished to make way for University of Leeds buildings one of which is under construction below, while others are visible on the left. Above these are Blenheim Terrace on Woodhouse Lane. Following Woodhouse Lane across to the far right of the image at the top is the Merrion Centre.

In 1984 Leeds General Infirmary extended and the Clarendon Wing was built over the tunnel. The cleared area below eventually became the site of the Leeds Dental Hospital. In the top right corner of the image is the sprawling gothic structure of the Leeds General Infirmary.
