Interior view taken within the single storey tower of the 19th century residence, Cookridge Tower located off Hospital Lane, Otley Old Road. The tower was built onto the house in the 1870s by the then resident Alfred Wilberforce Sykes so as to install the Billiard Room, seen here, for the use of his family. He was a woollen and worsted manufacturer and merchant for the firm of Hudson, Sykes and Bousfield of 19 Wellington Street, Leeds and Low Hall Place, Holbeck. The 1891 Census records Alfred Sykes at Cookridge Tower with his wife Alice, sons, Cyril, aged 22 and Leslie, aged 16. The family employed four servants including a butler, cook, housemaid and kitchen maid. Cookridge Tower was demolished c1970 and housing in Ireland Crescent now occupies the site.
