Marquis of Granby, Lady Lane (City Centre)
Black & White imageUndated. View of the old Marquis of Granby public house at 56 Lady Lane, at the junction with St Peter's Street, looking West. Behind it can be seen one of the "book end" buildings at the bottom of Eastgate, while Eastgate itself can be seen on the image in-between the two buildings. The Marquis of Granby was rebuilt in 1897 and closed on 9th February, being demolished shortly afterwards for a road widening and improvement scheme. A new Marquis of Granby was built at the junction of Bridge Street and Quarry Hill, opening on 10th February 1933. The pub carries an advertisement for Melbourne Ales, from the nearby Melbourne Brewery on Regent Street.

Colour image2007. View of the Palace Hotel located in Kirkgate. The inset, top left, shows a stained glass feature which can be found in the leaded windows on either side of the lobby and also on the door to the vaults. It is the old Melbourne Brewery sign depicting a bowing courtier. The sign to the side elevation is vintage and has been restored. The Melbourne Brewery (Leeds) Ltd., once located in Plum Street merged with Tetley in 1960.

The Old Golden Fleece, Elland Road (Churwell)
Colour imageUndated. Image shows The Old Golden Fleece, once situated on Churwell Hill, Elland Road. It has recently been pulled down (2010) to make way for a new branch of Tesco Express. The pub was built in 1934 and replaced an earlier Old Golden Fleece. The Melbourne Brewery sign on the front of the building, depicting a bowing courtier, has now been incorporated into the external wall of the new Tesco building, due to open in 2011.
