River Aire, by St. Aidan's Open-Cast Mine. (Methley)
Black & White image20th June 1972. View of the River Aire beside St. Aidan's Open-Cast Mine, seen from Barnsdale Road. A bridge and slag heaps can be seen in the distance. Following flooding in the area in 1988 when the river banks burst and poured into the void caused by the open-cast mining, the river was re-routed and combined with the Aire & Calder Navigation Canal, and the area is now being converted into a wetlands nature reserve.

Colour image20th June 1972. View of St. Aidan's Open-Cast Mine at methley. A railway track runs along the left. The area around Methley has been mined for coal for centuries; by the 21st century only open-cast mining remains, but this particular mine has closed following flooding of the area in 1988 when the mining operations caused the River Aire to burst its banks. The area is now being converted into a wetland nature reserve.

St. Aidan's Open-Cast Mine (Methley)
Colour image20th June 1972. View of St. Aidan's open-cast mine showing slag heaps and slurry ponds, with a railway track on the right. Coal has been mined in Methley for domestic use since at least the 14th century and for industrial use since the 18th century. In the 19th century increased demand for coal led to deep mines being sunk, but these have all closed. The open-cast mine here has also gone in 1988, when the River Aire poured into the void caused by mining. The area is now being turned into a wetland nature reserve.
