Colour imageMay 2005. View of Allders Department Store on The Headrow at the time of it's closing in May 2005. Dortmund square is on the left. The building, designed by architects Atkinson & Shaw, was originally Lewis's and was opened on 17th September 1932, being one of the largest department stores in the North of England at the time. Lewis's closed in February 1991 when the company went into receivership, and the store was re-opened by Allders in 1996.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Civic Twinning this Bronze copy of an original erected by the Altien Brewery in Dortmund was unveiled by the sculptor Arthur Schultz-Engels and civic leaders Oberburgermaster Samtlebe and Lord Mayor Atkinson at the square's inauguration, September 1980. On the left in the background is a news agent and on the right St. John's shopping centre.
