Harry Ramsden's, 'World Famous Fish and Chips', Otley Road (Guiseley)
Colour imageOctober 2003 Harry Ramden's chain of fish and chip restaurants is now world famous but it all started here on the 20th December 1928 when Harry Ramsden opened a tiny fish and chip shop with a capital of just £150. Within three years he had built a large restaurant with design features inspired by the Ritz Hotel. It boasted cut glass chandeliers and stained glass windows. Now Harry Ramsden's is an international chain with 170 outlets attracting 10 million customers annually. The company employs its own fleet of trawlers, chips 10 million pounds of Maris Piper potatoes per year and prides itself on the recipe for batter, which still remians a closely guarded secret.

Harry Ramsden (1888-1963) started the business in 1928 and soon built up a reputation for the quality of his food and for owning the largest fish and chip shop in the world, but it was not until after the business was floated on the Stock Exchange in 1988 that it became a chain of restaurants, which now boasts 170 outlets worldwide. In October 1999 it was bought by Granada Food Service company who in turn became the Select Service Partner (SSP) Ltd division of Compass. The business is now run by SSP in Weybridge, Surrey.
