Inner Ring Road Construction, aerial view (City Centre)
1968. View of the Inner Ring Road under construction. The building started in January 1964 with the 1200' tunnel which opened in January 1967. The section between Woodhouse Lane and Quarry Hill was opened in August 1968. In the foreground, left, is Carlton Barracks, home of the Territorial Army. At the right hand side is the tailoring firm, Hepworth's Ltd, now Ventura. Claypit Lane runs from left to right across the centre and over the new Inner Ring Road. The next flyover is Lovell Park Road with Elmwood Mills to the left of it and Tower House and Merrion Centre multi-storey car park to the right. Above, the square surrounded by trees is Lovell Park and on the right of the park is the on the circular plot there is the Leeds Public Dispensary on North Street. Immediately above is Crispin House. The ABC is visible at the top of Vicar Lane. Quarry Hill Flats are visible at the very top edge.
