Crowd of children standing at the junction of Noble Street, seen in the centre and Hope Street. On the left are the premises of Levi and Co, wines and spirit merchant, posters and sign on window are in Hebrew (stating goods are kosher). This was an area predominently populated by Jewish immigrants from the mid 1800s onwards. The overcrowded abysmal living conditions led to the Leylands being designated an Unhealthy Area under the 1901 Housing Act. Many of the boys seen here are wearing traditional Yamulkah (skullcap) which denotes those of orthodox faith. All the children are in period dress.
