Black & White image1st July 1954. The woods seen are called Pepper Woods and are located just above St. John's church on Harrogate Road. A synagogue occupies some of this view now, whilst most of the wood is still here. Part of the Moortown Estate named 'Fir Trees' was built at the bottom of Fir Tree Lane which joins Harrogate Road between St. John's Church and this wood. This is just at the left-hand edge of this image.

Lewis's Department Store construction in progress (City Centre)
Black & White image26th August, 1931. View, looking north-east, of the progress being made on the building of Lewis's Department Store in the Headrow. From when the excavations were completed to the opening of the store the timescale was just over one year. The building was designed by the architect George Walter Atkinson of Mark Lane, Leeds. The tower of St. John's Church is visible to the north of the site and the parish room of St. John in Mark Lane is visible left.
