The sod cutting ceremony took place on the very cold and wintry Easter Monday of 1908. Those who took part were issued with a certificate to commemorate the occasion. Most of them are women who have brought along their garden spades and are wearing mens' flat cloth caps. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.
