Wetherby County Library under construction in Westgate (Wetherby)
Colour imageApril 1965. Image shows Wetherby County Library under construction in 1965 in Westgate. It was built on waste land, the remains of the street widening of 1937-38. The library at one time occupied a building in the market place which eventually became the YEB showrooms. It then moved to an annexe of Wharfedale Lawn. The construction work of the new library, which includes a lecture room, is being carried out by Fowlers Ltd. The library was opened on Wednesday 8th September 1965 by County Alderman Major J H Hudson, vice-chairman of the West Riding County Council.

Novels are arranged in free standing bookshelves while the non-fiction lines the walls. The counter is small, left and in two sections with drawer and cupboard space. There is a recessed area on top to store the daily issue. There are two displays in the background including one of Thailand.

In the centre is the small counter with storage space and trays of issue on the top. Non-fiction books line the walls and adult fiction is shelved in free-standing bookcases. The junior library is off to the right. At this time, prior to 1974, County Libraries were administered by West Riding County Council.

The library is constructed in stone with a large glass frontage on the ground floor and a lecture room above. It occupies a site which was previously wasteground. The library was opened on Wednesday 8th September 1965 by County Alderman Major J H Hudson, vice-chairman of the West Riding County Council.

This is the junior section with shelves of 'stories for Young People' lining the walls, and books about 'Real Things and Real People'. By the window on the right there is a display of books for the little ones. In the foreground there is comfortable seating and also a table and four chairs for reading and study.
